SC101 Participates in the Lincoln Elementary
Health and Resource Expo
Lincoln Elementary's 3rd annual Health and Resource Expo was a fun and exciting family event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of helping others and help the community.
Sickle Cell 101 participated in this event by hosting a sickle cell education booth. With the help of squishy-round water beads and crescent shaped beads, we were able to demonstrate the differences between normal red blood cells and sickle shaped red blood cells.
We also encouraged parents and children to find out their genetic status. This year was a success and we were happy to be a part of it.

SC101 Meets with Sickle Cell Organizations
In August met with sickle cell organizations in Europe, in hopes of partnership for projects to educate the sickle cell population. The first organization SIckle Cell 101 met with was Association Pour l'Information et la Prevention de la Drepanocytose or APIPD in Paris, France. Sickle Cell 101 also visited the Sickle Cell Society located in London, United Kingdom.
Both organizations have agreed to collaborate with Sickle Cell 101 on future projects proposed.

SC101 Co-hosts the 3rd Annual Sickle Cell Disease Patient and Family Symposium in Los Angeles
Sickle Cell 101 co-hosted the the Patient and Family Sickle Cell Disease Symposium alongside Sickle Cell Warriors, Inc., the Sickle Cell Community Consortium, and IASCNAPA. This well-attended event drew patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and industry representative from across the country.
Topics covered within the four days span included: Traveling with SCD, Bone Marrow Transplant, Managing Finances with SCD, Transitioning to Adult Care and more.
Sickle Cell 101 hosted the red carpet, Hollywood-themed "Sickle Cell Stars Awards Gala", which honored those creating positive changes within the sickle cell community.

SC101 Goes to Sickle Cell Camp 2016
Sickle Cell 101 returned back to Camp Arroyo in Livermore to provide sickle cell education to the camp-goers at Sickle Cell Camp.
After heated pool swimming, kids gathered for the sickle cell education session provided by Sickle Cell 101.
This year's lesson taught kids how to differentiate between a normal red blood cell and and a sickle red blood cell. To better illustrate this, kids created red blood cells with balloons. One balloon was squishy and flexible, while the other more stiff.
Kids were able to take home balloons to teach family and friends the difference.

SC101 Presents on Social Media Education at the 10th Anniversary FSCDR Education Symposium
Alongside Sickle Cell Warriors, Inc., Sickle Cell Unite, A.S.A.P., and researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, Sickle Cell 101's president and founder, Cassandra Trimnell was a panel speaker for how it educates and supports the sickle cell community with social media.
This well attended event was an international affiair, with MDs, PhDs and researchers coming from India, Nigeria, and across the United States. The event spanned over four days and was hosted at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center.

SC101 Attends the Sickle Cell
Community Consortium Leadership Summit
Sickle Cell 101 was sponsored by the Sickle Cell Community Consortium to attend and present at its inaugural Leadership Summit and General Assembly.
This event was attended by 21 community based organizations from 18 states. President and Founder, Cassandra Trimnell presented on Consortium Project Management, based on the Patient-Powered Sickle Cell Literature Project.
The summit spanned over five days with workshops and trainings.

SC101 Represents Sickle Cell
Community at the Iron Overload Summit
Sickle Cell 101 was invited to represent the voice of the sickle cell community at the Novartis Iron Overload Summit. This sponsored event was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Along with discussing the needs of the community and sickle cell patients, iron overload was discussed, which is a complication that occurs after too many blood transfusions.
Novartis presented its new drug to prevent iron overload called Jadenu, which is the new and improved tablet form of Exjade.

SC101 Presents at the 43rd
SCDAA National Sickle Cell Convention
Sickle Cell 101 was one of the few organizations selected to present an abstract at the 43rd Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Convention.
Sickle Cell 101 talked about how to use of social media to educate about sickle cell, while also raising awareness.
The annual convention was held in Baltimore, Maryland. Program event sessions included: sickle cell education, updates on new therapies, and child to adult transitioning.

SC101 Goes to Sickle Cell Camp 2015
Sickle Cell 101 volunteered at Camp Super Stars, sickle cell
camp for kids with sickle cell and their siblings.
Tucked in between the mountains, Camp Arroyo was the perfect location for campers to have some fun in the sun.
Campers participated in Music Therapy, swimming (in a heated pool of course), rock climbing, arts and crafts, zip-lining. Oh, and we couldn't skip out on the sickle cell education! See you next year campers!

SC101 Visits Children's Hospital Oakland
On World Sickle Cell Day, Sickle Cell 101 visited the only sickle cell comprehensive center on the West Coast, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
We came bearing gifts to both inpatient and outpatient children with sickle cell.
Gift bags included school supplies to encourage patients to learn more about their disease, along with our sickle cell activity book. To access our sickle cell activity book please visit our 'Media for Download' section.
April 15 - 16, 2015 [Sickle Cell Advocacy Day]
SC101 Advocates for Sickle Cell
Treatment Act in Washington D.C.
For Sickle Cell Advocacy Day, Sickle Cell 101 traveled to Washington, D.C. to speak with representatives regarding the reinstatement of the Sickle Cell Treatment Act.
There we met with California state representatives and talked about importance of bill H.R. 1807. For more information on H.R. 1807 click here.
It was an honor to advocate alongside many advocates and organizations who work tirelessly for the sickle cell cause. We hope to make this an annual visit.
